Effective Therapy Activities for Home
Practical, fun, and effective activities for parents to do at home to reinforce speech and listening skills.
Therapy doesn't stop at the clinic. Consistent practice at home is essential for progress. Children learn best through play, so keeping activities fun is crucial. Here are some engaging activities to try:
Listening Games
The Sound Walk: Go for a walk and list all the sounds you hear (birds, cars, wind). This builds auditory awareness.
Hide the Clock: Hide a ticking clock or a playing music box and have your child find it. This helps them practice sound localization (finding where sound comes from).
Sound Discrimination
The Ling 6 Sounds: Provide toys associated with the 6 Ling sounds (ah, ee, oo, sh, s, m). For example, a snake for "s" and a baby for "ah". Make the sound and have the child pick up the correct toy.
Language Building
Barrier Games: Put a barrier between you and your child. Give instructions ("Put the red block on the blue block") and see if they can follow without visual cues. Then switch roles.
Remember, the goal is communication, not perfection. Celebrate every attempt!
